SÖDERFJÄRDEN

StatusProven
Country Finland
CoordinatesLat. N 63°00' Long.E 21°35'
Diameter km 5.5
Age Ma or date >640.0
Synonyms Sulva
Remarks Very nice impact structure few kilometers south from town of Vaasa. Today flat crater depression is covered fully by fields and hills surrounds the crater like crater walls. However, hills are not true crater walls since structure is eroded. There is an information center Meteoririihi in the middle of the crater. Nice view can be seen from top of the Öjberg.

40Ar/39Ar age was tried to obtain for Söderfjärden, but result was not solid (schmieder 2014). Conclusion was that the impact structure is over 640 Ma old. That makes it older than previously suggested (550-600 Ma).

Diameter between 5 and 6.6 km are offered.
